Interview

For JLA – After writing the series from Alex’s POV, what challenges did you face writing from Aiden’s POV in Elixir? It was hard to get into Aiden’s head because he was more of a challenge to write than I anticipated.

For Alex – Um…seriously girl, if I ever hear “My Seth” again, I may puke. Is there anything about that time that you want to remember? No. Well, except Aiden because he believed in me.

For Aiden – Where does your strength come from? Standing up to Alex and even the Gods, you were a rock during Elixir. How did you do it? It was all for Alex. I love her and I wasn’t giving up.

For Seth – During the time where you didn’t know where Alex was, what were you doing to find her? Everything. I was gonna find her.

AUTHOR BIO

Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal for young adults. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also wrote various novels and short stories. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, she can usually be found in front of her writing desk, creating weird and wonderful alternative worlds. Her debut novel The Puppet Spell, published in 2013 by Rowanvale Books, is a fantasy tale for young adults and the young at heart, inspired by her lifelong love of the fantastical, mythology, and video games. Emma also writes supernatural fantasy novels for older teens and adults. Her next book, Darkness Watching, is the first in the upper-YA/New Adult Darkworld series, and will be published in September 2013 by Curiosity Quills Press.

If I were to have another life, I think I’d want to be a rhinoceros. They seem very honest. Make like a rhinoceros, and tell the truth, I imagined myself as an old monk in an orange jumpsuit telling a young girl who looked like me. Otherwise spear the bastard with your horn. So I took my own monk advice and told Pierre how I felt. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised at the fucker’s nonchalance.

‘What can I say? I’m not used to virgins.’ He sat on my bed with my laptop on his lap, typing away, and didn’t even look at my face. ‘I’m used to women who know what they want, and take it.’

I didn’t understand; this was the opposite to how he had treated me last night. Last night he’d seemed genuinely concerned about me.

‘I’m not like that,’ I said quietly. I sat in front of him, wishing I could reach out and slam the laptop lid on his fingers, to force him to give me his full attention. But I felt too vulnerable.

‘Yes, I can tell.’

I blushed with shame. I was feeling more and more inadequate, like I was sinking into a pit of quicksand. How was I supposed to know what was normal or not in the bedroom?

‘Well you’re going to need to be more patient with me if you ever want me to enjoy it,’ I told Pierre quietly, looking down at my hands.

‘I can try, I suppose,’ he said, with an intense look on his face. Then he shifted his gaze to me, taking me in, and his lips curled into an easy smile. ‘We can have lots of practice.’

My lips matched his in a relieved smile. I reached for him, feeling the weight of his strong body as I pulled him down onto me.

***

Have you had sex yet? I ask Christian one night at the beach, and he looks up from his lap at the crashing waves.

Why do you want to know? he replies, taking another mouthful of wine.

Because. I haven’t, I say, throwing the truth straight out into the water.

Good. Keep it that way, he says. It’s a different world out there for guys and girls.

How?

He shrugs. Guys get a pat on the back for landing themselves a girl. Girls get called a slut. People don’t like to admit it, but it’s true.

That’s not fair, I say, knees drawn up, resting my chin on my crossed arms.

No. It’s not. But it’s how it works. Guys treat you differently after they’ve had sex with you.

Do you treat girls differently?

He changes positions in the sand.

Honestly? Yes. I know you’re going to think I’m like all the other guys, but I’m your brother. So trust me when I tell you to keep your jeans zipped for as long as possible if you want a good rep.

He hands me the wine to distract me. Then he puts his fist to the top of my head and rubs. Hard.

Stop it! I hate noogies! I scream, trying to peel his fist off my burning head.

Seriously, Mill, he says, letting me straighten up my new afro and taking the wine back. Don’t be a slut.

“You currently have 4.3 million dollars in your account at your disposal Ms. Adams, why do you ask?” a young gentleman in his early thirties, dressed in a suit, looking every bit the bank manager that he is, informs me the next morning. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the whole situation, but I do know one thing for sure, I wasn’t letting Bill get another dollar anytime soon. I’m very sleep deprived, since I didn’t get much of it last night. I kept going over everything that had happened. It kept me tossing and turning in my bed, my thoughts going back to Matt. I look the manager in the eye. “I need two thousand of it in cash for myself.” Then I hand a small piece of paper with Frank’s requested amount and account number over to him. “This amount put into that account number.” After he takes the first small paper, I hand him another with Matt’s account number. “The rest is to be transferred into this account number. Both of which are current accounts here at your facility.” Eyes wide open, he asks, “What do you mean by the rest, ma’am?” I had a feeling this would happen and was prepared for it. With a strong stern voice, I say emphatically, “I. Mean. All. Of. What’s. Left,” indicating just how serious I am. With a horrified look on his face, unbelieving what he’s heard, he protests, “But, that would mean emptying out your account completely, ma’am.” His response is just as shocked, as I’m staring him down. I have a feeling he’s going to play this game with me all morning if I let him.“I know. I’m looking at it as a very generous donation to someone who really needs it. It’s only money,” I say, trying to sound like I don’t care. “I’m pretty sure with my fiancé being my manager, there will be plenty more to fill it up again soon,” I say with a sarcastic smile on my face. He still looks skeptical, but easily gives up. “Okay,” he states with an apprehensive look, and tries to hold himself together as well as he can. “I’ll get the documentation for you to sign, authorizing the transfer.” He quickly stands up and heads to his office door. Once he’s left his office, I dig into my purse for my phone and I shoot off a text to Matt. I need a favor. A After a minute, I receive a response. What’s up? M I’m going to put some money in your account for safekeeping. A Why my account? M I need someone I could trust, is that you? A He doesn’t respond immediately, and I’m sitting there thinking maybe this might be a bad idea after all. But, then I hear the ping of a response. Of course, Pinkie Promise. M That’s when I blank out and I’m suddenly pulled into another memory. I’m sitting on a bed in a little boy’s room and there is a small child sitting across from me on the bed. It’s Matt, his eyes are red and swollen, like he’s been crying for a while, and he’s looking at me with desperation on his face. I tell him, “Everything is going to be all right, I’m here now and I’m never leaving you.” He stares into my eyes and says, “Promise?” My response to him, without a doubt is, “Pinkie Promise.” Holding out my pinkie and locking it with his, I hug him with a force promising not to let go. I hear the ping of my phone again, breaking me from the memory, pulling me back to reality. Why is it that I get these memories like that, randomly? I’m beginning to appreciate when I was dreaming them, at least I didn’t spaz out like just did. You still there? M Yes. I’m still here, Pinkie Promise. A Do you need my bank info? M No, I already have it. A How the hell did you get it? M The same guy who gave me your address. ;-) A

I dissolved into the seat of his amazing car. A low moan escaped my lips but Killian just showed his dimples and buckled me in. I wondered what he’d do if I pulled him tightly against me and sniffed… for an hour or two. He opened his door and folded into the seat with absolute grace regardless of his size. “Ah hell,” he muttered and turned my way. Unlatching my seatbelt, he pulled me in for the most mouthwatering kiss I’d ever had. His lips, soft but firm, molded to mine. His tongue ran over my teeth, tasted, dipped deeper, and then plunged. He effortlessly slid out the elastic holding my hair before spreading his fingers to either side of my scalp. The kiss intensified and Killian made promises for the night ahead with his lips. He tasted so damn good. When he pulled back, I actually whimpered and smiled at the low rumbling growl that came from Killian’s throat. He took my lower lip between his teeth and pulled slightly before letting go. He put distance between us leaving me bereft. “We’ll eat at my house.” He kissed my forehead, reached over, grabbed the seatbelt, and fastened me in again. My hands went to my hair as I looked around for the hair tie. “Leave it.” I stopped my search but couldn’t help running my fingers through the mussed tangles. Killian’s hand captured mine. “No.” He released my fingers just as fast as he verbalized the one word. I wasn’t a pushover, didn’t have much experience with guys, but I had some. I should have argued, straightened my hair anyway, or even voiced some sort of displeasure. An electrically charged pulse shot straight to the junction of my thighs, and there I went and tried to stain his car’s upholstery. I kept my mouth shut.

About the Authors

Steph Campbell grew up in Southern California, but now calls the Northeast home. She has one husband, four children and a serious nail polish obsession. She's repped by Kevan Lyon at Marsal Lyon Literary Agency.

Steph's works include Delicate, Grounding Quinn and Beautiful Things Never Last; My Heart for Yours and My Fate for Yours (with Jolene Perry); A Toast to the Good Times (with Liz Reinhardt) and the bestselling new adult LENGTHS series with Liz Reinhardt: Lengths, Depths, Limits and coming soon: Ties & Riptides.

Liz Reinhardt was born and raised in the idyllic beauty of northwest NJ. A move to the subtropics of coastal Georgia with her daughter and husband left her with a newly realized taste for the beach and a bloated sunscreen budget. Right alongside these new loves is her old, steadfast affection and longing for bagels and the fast-talking foul mouths of her youth.

She loves Raisinettes, even if they aren't really candy, the Oxford comma, movies that are hilarious or feature zombies, any and all books, but especially romance (the smarter and hotter, the better), the sound of her daughter's incessantly wise and entertaining chatter, and watching her husband work on cars in the driveway.

She is the author of the Brenna Blixen series (Double Clutch, Junk Miles, Slow Twitch), the Youngblood series (Fall Guy, Perfectly Unmatched), and co-writes with the awesome Steph Campbell in the Lengths series (Lengths, Depths, Limits, Ties, Riptides).

Personal Post : I apologize ...

I must take the time to explain a few things that have been happening and I owe a hell of a lot of people an apology. My husband has recently returned from a 6-month deployment, to many of you with loved ones in the military have heard of much longer deployments. But I must say, a deployment is a deployment, and distance is distance. It will always feel like half of my heart and a part of my life is missing, when my husband is away. It's never easy.

Reading many amazing books by so many great authors, while he was gone, was my way of getting through this deployment. I had so much time in the world to dedicate towards my reading, writing reviews, and helping out all of you, as best as I could.

Now that he's home, it has been a adjustment. Thankfully the transition back to having each other has gone smoothly, but we're in constant planning mode. With a honeymoon, wedding, AND we need to find a house and move into it by the end of December. So, we're very limited on time and my reading and participation in blog tours had to come to a sudden stop!

I thought I would be able to handle all of it, but I need to set my priority straight. For the remainder of the month, I'm pulling myself out of blog tours that I signed up for. I do plan on participating on promotion posts and sadly, I feel like that's the only thing I can offer at the moment. I truly apologize for any inconvenience that I cause ... gosh, I feel horrible about it.

OK ... back to planning.
