Excerpt

Chapter One
Laurelyn McLachlan

This is an unprecedented moment. I’m awake before Jack Henry, studying his sleeping figure—it’s a fine one—but that’s not what makes this morning a new experience. I’m waking next to him as my husband.
Wow. I did it. I married a man who propositioned me a year ago, asking me to be his companion for three months. His idea of our pairing deciphered into something much different back then—an offer of noncommittal sex in exchange for the time of my life. Translation? I agreed to be his whore. There, I admit it, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made regardless of what kind of label we place upon it. Now he’s my husband—forever mine—and I couldn’t be happier.
No number fourteen for him. Ever.
We began as strangers—as most couples do—but our beginning was so much more complicated. That simple word makes me giggle each time I hear or say it now. There’s never a time I don’t recall the freakish control my husband displayed when he told me he was a man who didn’t do complicated. Damn, was he ever wrong. I turned his world on its head. To know I hold that power over him makes me feel invincible. And adored.
Some would consider our inception into this whirlwind a perverted one. Even I did in the beginning, but then we became so much more than either of us intended. Now we’re Mr. and Mrs. Jack Henry McLachlan and this is the beginning of the rest of our lives. We’re setting out into the world to write our own story—in stone, never sand.

Release Day : Private Show by Danielle Torella

Private Show Release Day BannerSynopsis

Tess has just discovered sex. And now, she’s about to discover sex as a weapon.

The Seattle barista and art student is happy with her beautiful Brit boyfriend, Ben — especially in the bedroom. But while Ben’s her first, she’s hardly his. And Ben’s sexual history seems to be popping up in Tess’s face like something out of a zombie movie, and it has her questioning his commitment — and questioning whether his appealing alpha maleness is just a cover for a controlling personality.

Maybe one that’s meant to keep her from asking too many questions.

Is Ben the problem, or is everybody from his past the problem?
Tess is asking the questions, and pushing hard for answers.

Is Nicole, the ex-fiancé who cheated on Ben, trying to worm her way back into his life? Was there something between Ben and Tess’s best friend, Erin? Or what’s going on with Ben’s adored teenage sister, Caroline, and Ben’s best friend Dan? And how did Ben get Tess a job interview with Mr. Andrews, his sophisticated but slimy boss at the music magazine?

As Tess comes to learn, relationships — especially sexual ones — are as much about power as love. With each new discovery, she finds herself in a struggle to hold her head together as much as her heart.

And to find where her own power lies.

Excerpt

I decide not to waste much time on my wardrobe. I grab my new jeans, a long-sleeved white tee, boots, and veto drying my hair by putting on my favorite camo ball cap. Once I’m ready, the girls and I grab a bite to eat and all go our separate ways. I crank up the radio and the heat in the Honda. It feels like minutes instead of an hour when I realize I’ve been lost in thought the majority of the way. Can we say dangerous? Note to self: focus while driving.

I pop in our drunk mix cd that Caroline always plays in her room while we drink PJ. It’s a lot more comical to listen to while sober. Seriously, the country version of “Gin and Juice” and “The Monster” by Eminem? I can’t help but laugh. It doesn’t get any better when “Genie in a Bottle” by Christina Aguilera begins playing. What was she thinking? Oh, wait. She wasn’t thinking because she was drunk.

I approach Grassy Pond, and nothing has changed since Thanksgiving. It’s still stoplight after stoplight. I can’t wait to hit that gravel road. I see the farm approaching and feel the butterflies within my stomach. For once, I’m excited and relieved to be home.

Turning off the ignition, I see Blue running toward me. As soon as I’m out of the car, he attacks me. “Yeah, boy, I’ve missed you, too.” I rub behind his ears and then make my way to the house.
There’s no need to hurry, because as I glance up, Tessa and Mama are in full out sprints. I giggle inside. Tessa wraps me in a tight embrace.
“Miss me much?” I smirk.
“Char, I swear. Mama and Daddy have been workin’ me to death on this farm. If you didn’t get home soon, I might actually have had to take care of those stupid goats, not to mention sloppin’ the hogs. Yuck!”
I should have known Tessa was more excited because that meant less work for her, but that’s my sis, always missin’ when a little hard work needs to be done.

“Hey, hun, I’m glad you’re home. Your dad’s gone into town to get a few posts for the fence. I don’t know what has gotten into that bull out there. It’s like he just doesn’t know which side he belongs,” Mama says.
I pop the trunk and grab my bags. Mama grabs my laundry basket, and we make our way into the house.

As I walk through the screen door, the sound of an F250 that I’d know anywhere rings in my ears. I smile and throw my bag at the bottom of the stairs. I do a one-eighty, press the screen door open, jump off the stairs, and run as fast as my legs will go to that perfect sound. Cash opens the door and steps out in one swift motion. He has on a pair of jeans, a white plaid pearl snap, camo hat, and boots. Damn. I jump straight into his arms and hold him as close as possible.

“Miss me much?” He winks.

I begin to laugh uncontrollably. “You know, I just used that line on Tessa.” I pull him closer. He looks into my eyes, smiles with that damn dimple, and I feel complete. Cash Money makes me whole.
He finally puts me down when he hears the screen door open. I see Tessa standing there with her hands on her hips. “Um, did y’all plan that?”

“Plan what, Tess?” I question as I straighten my long-sleeved white shirt. Then, it dawns on me. Jeans, white shirt, camo hat, and boots. Cash and I look like we planned our freakin’ wardrobe.
“What can I say? Great minds think alike,” Cash says as he slaps my ass while we walk toward the house. We go inside and Mama has lunch waiting.

Synopsis

Katie wants to invest her heart and soul in love, but she may lose both to Hell.

Katie, a senior in high school, is torn between loving the “good” guy, her childhood friend Wes who makes promises he doesn’t keep and abandons her when she needs him the most, and the “bad” guy, the new kid at school Josh who is also a real demon from Hell. Katie wants someone who pays attention to her and puts her first, but what is she willing to give up to find him?

Excerpt

The bell rang as Katie slowly made her way to the locker room. She reached forward to grab the door handle when someone grabbed her from behind and lifted her up. A squeak of surprise escaped her lips, but no other sound came out. A hand covered her mouth. Really? Katie thought. Again? He’s going to pay for it this time. She struggled against her attacker, but his grip was too strong. He lifted her like she weighed no more than a doll. He carried her toward the gymnastic storage area and stepped over the mats until they were in the far back corner, covered in shadow.

Wes set her down but refused to take his hand of her mouth. Katie clawed and scratched at his hand and arm and attempted to kick him. Wes calmly grabbed her wrists with his free hand and pressed his body against hers so she couldn’t attack him anymore. Her face turned red and anger boiled through her veins. She screamed even though his hand was still over her mouth.

“Katie, please, calm down. I’m not going to hurt you.”

In response, she struggled against his body—a futile attempt since he was so much stronger than she was.

Wes opened his mouth to speak again, but the words never came out. Instead, a familiar, “Again?” echoed through the storage space, and Wes was pulled away from Katie. Josh had him by the back of the collar and threw him onto a pile of mats. Katie took deep breaths and moved away from the wall to get a better view.

“Why can’t you take a hint, Wes? The lady doesn’t want anything to do with you.”

Wes got to his feet and brought his fists up, ready to fight. The space was big enough that there was a few feet between the two boys, but if things escalated, Katie would be caught in the middle of the battle.

“Yeah, well, she wouldn’t want you if she knew what you really were.”

Josh threw his head back and laughed. “And what is that, Wes? A nice, clean cut boy who actually pays attention to her and wants to be around her?”

Wes’s eyes narrowed to slits. “You know exactly what I’m talking about.”

Josh clicked his tongue on the roof of his mouth. “I’m afraid I don’t. I think you may be delusional.”

Katie had her back pressed against the wall and slowly slid her way to the opening so she could run into the gym and get help. Josh was doing a great job of staying between her and Wes.

“Don’t listen to him, Katie. He’s only using you to get to me.”

Katie glanced over Josh’s shoulder. Wes had taken his eyes off his opponent for a second and stared at her, a pleading look in his eyes. Typical, she thought. Wes always thought things were about him. Someone needed to let him know the world didn’t revolve around him. She tore her gaze from his and continued toward the exit. Wes sensed her intention and moved so he blocked the opening. He was within an arm’s length of Josh.

Josh shook his head. “C’mon, Wes. That’s not very nice. If Katie wants to leave, you should allow her to leave.”

“No. I’m not letting you do this to her.”

Josh laughed. “Do what? Show her how a real boyfriend is supposed to treat her?”

Katie stopped for a second and glanced at Josh. Did he just say what she thought he said? Boyfriend? Could it really be true? Was that how he viewed their thing? Katie wasn’t exactly sure what was going on, but she was going to rethink it the next time she got the chance. If the situation hadn’t been so dire, she would have let the inner smile play across her lips.

Wes’s face crunched in anger, his fists balled at his sides. Without another word, he lunged forward. Wes and Josh fell to the ground, right at Katie’s feet. Wes sat on Josh’s chest and slammed his fist into the side of Josh’s head. Katie screamed.

“Stop it! Wes! Leave him alone!”

She wanted to jump between the two to make him stop, but she was afraid of getting hit. The pupils in Wes’s eyes were dilated, completely blocking out the brown that was normally there. Rage shrouded his face. Fear squeezed Katie’s chest. She’d never seen him act like that before. She continued her trek toward the opening. If she couldn’t stop him, Ms. Bode would have to.

Wes brought his fist up by his shoulder to smash into Josh’s face again. As he brought it down, Josh grabbed it and stopped him. Katie stopped and watched the two of them. Josh stared at Wes, a smile curling his lips. Blood stained Josh’s teeth.

“That all you got?” With a growl and movement almost too fast for Katie to see, Josh pushed Wes.

Wes sailed across the room, through the opening, and slammed into the wall several yards away. Katie’s jaw fell open. What just happened? No one was that strong. Josh got to his feet and wiped the blood from his nose with the back of his hand. He stared at Wes, who sat on the floor, his head hanging on his chest.

Josh reached his right hand behind him, toward Katie. “C’mon. He won’t bother you for a while.”

Katie hesitated taking the offered hand. Her chest heaved with ragged breaths, her head swam with confusion. How did Josh throw Wes like that?

Josh looked over his shoulder at her. “You’re not going to get another chance. Are you coming or what?”

Katie shook herself out of her daze and grabbed Josh’s hand. The pair stepped over the mats and through the opening. They stopped in front of Wes. He looked up at them, his eyes taking a moment to focus. Katie glanced into the gym. Why wasn’t anyone else coming to help them? Surely they heard the fight, her screaming.

The door to the girl’s locker room opened in slow motion. Two of her classmates walked out, but their movement wasn’t normal. They, too, were stuck in slow motion.

“Hey!” she called to them and tried to run up to them, but Josh had a tight grip on her hand and wouldn’t let go.

“They can’t do anything to help you,” Josh said softly. “They don’t even know what’s happening.”

Katie’s breath caught in her throat. She turned back to Josh, eyes wide. “What is happening?” The words barely made it out of her mouth. Josh smiled.

“Let her go. I’m the one you want,” Wes croaked from the floor.

Josh knelt down in front of him, inadvertently pulling Katie closer since he wouldn’t let go of her hand. “You know I’m not going to do that. Besides, you never know how useful she’s actually going to be.”

Wes attempted to lunge for Josh, but his balance was off and he fell to one side. Josh laughed. Katie stared down the hall at the two girls as they headed to class. She reached for them, hoping they’d sense her desperation and turn around. Josh jerked on her hand, pulling her into his body. Her back was against his chest, and he wrapped his arm around her shoulders. His breath tickled her ear lobe.

“Take one last look, Katie. It might be the last time you see him.”

Katie stared down at Wes. He struggled to get to his feet. Pain pinched his face, along with something else. For a moment, Katie thought it looked like sadness. He reached for her. Involuntarily, she reached for him too. Then, the world was shrouded in blackness.

Synopsis

At age thirty-nine, Lucie Walker has no choice but to start her life over when she comes to, up to her knees in the chilly San Francisco Bay, with no idea how she got there or who she is. Her memory loss is caused by an emotional trauma she knows nothing about, and only when handsome, quiet Grady Goodall arrives at the hospital does she learn she has a home, a career, and a wedding just two months away. What went wrong? Grady seems to care for her, but Lucie is no more sure of him than she is of anything. As she collects the clues of her past self, she unlocks the mystery of what happened to her. The painful secrets she uncovers could hold the key to her future—if she trusts her heart enough to guide her.

Review

This was an extremely different book for me to read, but very refreshing. I wouldn't necessarily say that it should be 100% classified as a romance because it's much more than that. When I first read the synopsis before signing up, I was very intrigued by the story line. I'd admit that the pace was a bit slow (for me), I guess I'm just so use to storylines happening so quickly. This is not one of those reads, if you're expecting that, turn right the other way.

We have Lucie Walker, who has a fresh start, but it comes with a lot of turmoil and emotions from her past. After being found in San Francisco Bay with zero memory of how or why she's there, she has to somehow figure out what got her there. Learning quickly that she has a fiancé (and of course, no memory of him as well), she hopes that he can be the key to bringing all of her memory back. But it's not that easy!

And Grady, bless his heart. Not only do we get to witness Lucie's struggle to remember and her journey to get there, but we see Grady gradually overcome his struggles with not just himself, but also losing his father.

Their "new" relationship to me is a bit awkward, Lucie just ganders around and Grady doesn't know how to take it. The way that Lucie is now, definitely wasn't that way before. And to me, it was ALWAYS something to remember, I kept questing and saying "why is this weird?!". She lost her memory, she had NO idea how she was before. But pieces of her past scattered around helps her realize that she was a rather shut-off person, maybe uptight is another word for it. Grady has trouble accepting his "new" fiancée, ultimate question, can he still love her? Will Lucie be able to gain all of her memory back and remember her love for Grady?

Lucie goes through SO MUCH to learn about her past and why she lost her memory. And it's so damn emotional, to me the pace was slow, but I also took that like, moments like this (where she needs to remember) it simply can't be rushed. As a reader, I needed to really understand what was going on, to feel exactly what she was feeling. We have to sit and absorb. Such raw emotions. I promise, you won't even believe what she ends up learning ... (I wish I could say more). But what she does, it explains why she was the way she was pre-accident.

It's a compelling and emotional story that I think most readers will enjoy. If you're looking for a steamy romance, that's not what you'll get here.

Excerpt

We stood behind a pair of palm trees, which hid us from the main path, and any potential
students walking by. We were not just hidden, though; we were totally alone.

It was my cue to walk over to the main door and head inside, but my feet didn’t budge. I
really, really didn’t want this night to end.

“So did you want to meet up again tomorrow and do some studying, or…” My words
trailed off, when Evan took my hand. He stepped closer to me.

“Your hand is so cold,” he said.

I stared at his neck for a moment—that’s where my eye level was. I was afraid to look
up. I was terrified, and crazy fucking excited. I breathed in, through my nose. He smelled of
cinnamon, of fresh-baked snickerdoodle cookies.

“I must be cold blooded,” I said, and finally gazed into his eyes.

He smiled, and brought both his hands up to my shoulders.

“Evan?” I turned away. “What are you doing?”

He leaned his head down and brushed his lips against my cheek. His mouth hovered over
my ear. “Don’t tell me you’ve never thought about it.” Then he kissed me, lightly, on my neck.

My knees buckled. If Evan hadn't been pushed up so close to me, I would have collapsed
to the ground.

“Oh my God… Evan.”

He wrapped his arm around my back, and pulled me even closer.

I wanted this. I wanted this so much. I’d been dreaming about it since the moment I first
laid eyes on him, way back in English 101, freshman year.

But it didn't feel right. Not with my roommate still in the picture. Not with their
anniversary just days away. I wanted Evan completely, but not like this.

He stared into my eyes. Touched his fingers against my chest.

“Evan…” I said.

He smiled, and moved his lips toward mine. “Sydney…”

I pulled away. A small raindrop touched the top of my head. “Whoa, what?” I looked
up. "Did you just feel that?”

“Huh? Feel what?”

“I think it’s…” I didn’t even have to finish my sentence. The rain started coming down
hard, and fast.

“Oh crap,” Evan said.

“Run!” I shouted, and we both raced around the trees, over to the front of McCarthy Hall.

The rain pelted the ground so hard that by the time I found cover under the canopy, I
was drenched with rain from head to toe. Evan joined me at my side, just as soaked as I was. I
pointed at him, and we both started laughing.

“I guess Melanie was right, after all,” I said.

He nodded, as he patted his hands against his ruined jacket and jeans. “Yeah, I guess she
was.” He reached his hand toward mine again, but he didn’t try to touch it. He had to know as
well as I did that our little moment had passed.

“Did you…” Evan started.

“Did I what?”

He bit down on his lower lip, like he wasn't sure if he was allowed to ask it. “Did you
want me to walk you to your room?”

I sighed. Of course I did. I wanted it more than anything.

But I knew he couldn't. I shook my head. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Evan. I think

I’m just gonna go to bed.”

He nodded, real fast, and said, “All right.”

I put my card in the slot. Pushed the door open. “I’ll see you later, okay?”

I entered the building and let the door shut behind me. When I reached the other side of
the entrance hall, I turned around and waved. He was still outside, still in the cold, still with the
rain to contend with. He waved back, with little enthusiasm. He turned around, put his jacket
over his head, and started running back down the hill.
