Review + Release + Giveaway | Pucked Off by Helena Hunting

***A Standalone novel in The Pucked Series***

I’m NHL defenseman Lance Romero, AKA Lance “Romance."

I’m notorious for parties and excess. I have the most penalty minutes in the league. I get into the most fights. I take the most hits. I’m a player on and off the ice. I’m the one women with no inhibitions want.

Not because I like the notoriety, but because I don’t know how to be any other way.

I have secrets. Ones I shared with the wrong person, and she used them against me. Sometimes she still does. I should cut ties. But she makes it difficult, because she’s the kind of bad I deserve.

At least that’s what I believed until someone from my past gets caught up in my present. She’s all the good things in this world. She lights up my dark.

I shouldn’t want her.

But I do.

I should leave her alone.

But I won’t.

Oh my Lance! Going off the other books in the series, his story was not what I was expecting. Not one bit, it's still leaving me ... I don't even know how to explain it. This series definitely gets better as each one is told. And this one tops the series as my fave.

This one was soooo different, the pace is different. I don't want to use the word slow because it makes it seem like it's a bad thing. We see the other side of Lance, the pained side of him. He feels so undeserving of anything good, but he shouldn't. Lance, you deserve the best ... YOU'RE DESERVING!

Lance's story literally punches you in the gut, I'm so thrown off by this story because I was expecting light-hearted with some comedy like we had in the others. You'll feel heartbreak for a man that had no sense of family or support. Not until he found his hockey family. He's a man that can't remove himself completely from a toxic relationship and ugh, there are times where you just want to tit punch THAT toxin in his life. And even that is a bit mild after hearing all that this toxin did/does to him. REPEATEDLY might I add.

Just like the other characters before him in this series, rumors go a long way with their player-like reputation. And Lance isn't any better, or is that even true? Don't believe everything you read online, kids. Being a well-known SINGLE hockey player, your every move is in the light and puck bunnies are keeping an eagle eye on you! Besides the bunnies, Lance can't seem to stay away from this chick who is the absolute worst human being EVER. She's manipulative and constantly tears him down. No matter how many times Lance tells himself it's the last time, something always brings him back to her. Oh, sweet soul, you don't need her!

As each chapter goes on, we see more and more of Lance's past and why he is the way he is. In a way, he's very closed off, not even those closest to him know the deepest parts of him. And then the heroine comes in (keeping all names a secret!) and she's a game changer for him. She's the light, the good that he needs, that he wants to work hard to keep her around as long as possible. To him, she's something familiar and for a while, he can't quite figure out why. They both have so much to get through, it's a bumpy ride for the both of them and you'll constantly be rooting for them.

Prepare to feel all the feels and the need to cuddle such a heartbroken man. Afraid of any light that comes across his life because he thinks that it'll disappear. Because he thinks he doesn't deserve all that ... why?! I apologize, I'll probably keep mentioning that, but I'm serious. Because of the shit people that he's had in his life, he doesn't quite see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm officially dubbing Lance's story my favorite out of the series, this one is the deepest; the most emotional. We get to dig deeper into one of the guys in the Pucked series and I'm so glad it was Lance. His story was so beautifully done, despite all the bad things he has faced, we needed to see that and his journey to overcome it all. He had so much missing in his life, but she brings forth all that he's deserving of.

Pucked fans, you won't be disappointed!

Armed with my clipboard, I walk down the hall to the waiting room. Lance is impossible to miss. Despite the fact that he’s wearing a sweatshirt and the hood is covering half of his face, he’s more than six feet of broad, hockey-playing man.

He’s so wide his shoulders encroach on the chairs on either side, which would explain why no one is sitting next to him. He’s slouched down so his head rests on the back of the chair, and his hands are clasped in his lap, a baseball cap hanging off one knee. His lips, plush and soft—I know since I’ve had them on mine; it might have been a decade ago, but I remember it clearly—are parted. He looks like he’s asleep.

I clear my throat. “Lance Romero?”

He doesn’t move.

Bernadette, the receptionist, gives me a meaningful look.

I clear my throat again and call his name a second time. He jolts awake and the hood falls back, exposing his face. It’s not in good shape. He has a black eye and bruises on his left cheek. There’s a fly bandage across one eyebrow.

Sadly, he’s still hot.

He blinks a few times, yawns, and smacks his lips, his tongue touching the split in the bottom one. His gaze sweeps the room and finally lands on me. Heat explodes in my cheeks and courses through my limbs, warming me from the inside out as he starts at my sneaker-clad feet and roams up over my yoga pants to my company-issued T-shirt before stopping at my face. I can’t look directly at him for more than a couple of seconds. I sincerely hope he doesn’t remember me. I cannot go there and also be professional.

I’m sure the smile he gives me has melted many a panty off a slutty bunny. Mine stay right where they’re supposed to, wedged up my ass.I force a polite, professional veneer. “I’m ready for you now.”
